Who knew it would take the re-emergence of the empire of Atlantis to revive the lost world of Aurora square box Glow-in-the-Dark monster model kits, but as you can see from this listing they are taking the lead in sending you back to the styrene kit stacked shelves of your favorite five-and-dime or hobby store. The bold and beautiful James Bama cover art that made these monster kits so irresistible in the 1960s was retouched to simulate the glow effect by another Aurora artist, which some collectors consider sacrilege but I find illuminating. In the case of these reissues I am more distracted by the Chaney/Toho licensing logos and the flags on the side panel, but then I am always looking to pretend I am roaming the aisles of Ben Franklin in 1974 so perhaps I'm too much of an originalist. All petty complaints aside, I'll take the hollow styrene of this full-blooded and pure Aurora take on Godzilla vs Kong (1972) versus the hollow earth of the empty and boardroom-addled Godzilla vs Kong (2021). Atlantis offers up these two tangible, touchable classic movie monsters that you can build yourself to bring your own personal human dimension to this never before seen colossal clash. Also offered here are two of Aurora's grisliest, The Phantom of the Opera with his "all eaten away" dungeon victim and the ultimate dungeon victim in the flesh (well what little he has left) The Forgotten Prisoner of Castel Mare! Seeing these four sealed square boxes sporting James Bama's available for a little over $100 is something special as most of us cannot spend the thousands of dollars that the four originals would cost . The boffo built-ups by Damien Turner are from my collection and included to offer some blood-dripping, hair-raising inspiration for your own versions of the most colossal conflict and the most forgotten prisoner styrene has ever known and and are (obviously) not included. .
